FAQs - Frequently asked questions about participating in the course

All participants must be able to swim as a basic requirement (free swimmers or similar swimming basics).

Furthermore, it is necessary to be present on the first two dates of all courses, as the safety briefing takes place. If this is not possible, you can be excluded from the course!

Please bring (waterproof) shoes, weatherproof / waterproof clothing as well as sun protection, sunscreen, sun glasses and a baseball cap. If you wear glasses, please use a safety strap to prevent accidental loss.

You should always bring a change of clothing in case you capsize while sailing.

All participants wear a life jacket during training, which is provided by the water sports center.

Students from the above-mentioned cooperating universities who have properly registered for university sports are insured for sports accidents in the officially attended courses in the context of university sports via the Unfallkasse Berlin. The legal basis of this insurance protection is the Social Code VII.

The following criteria apply to employees in order to be covered by the Unfallkasse Berlin:

• Exercise sport (certain physical exertion, not just entertainment value), not a competitive nature

• Participants must essentially consist of employees

• The offer must take place regularly (at least once a month) and over a longer period of time (from approx. 6 months) and participation must also be regular (at least planned)

• Exercise time and duration must be related to a compensatory character

If these requirements are met, employees are protected by statutory accident insurance while participating in the sports activities. It is irrelevant whether the sports offer is used during working hours or afterwards.

Other university members and other groups of participants in university sports are not covered by statutory accident insurance, and unregistered students are not insured either.

All sports accidents in the course of the Freie Universität Berlin must be reported immediately to the ZEH office, Tel. 838 53 320. In the event of an accident, the Unfallkasse Berlin is in any case obliged to come to a decision on a case-by-case basis after carefully examining the facts.

A change of date or course is generally not possible, as the students are only insured against accidents in the booked course!

In urgent exceptional cases, an alternative appointment can be made by personal arrangement with the university sports department.

New water sports enthusiasts with previous experience (completed courses, club experience, sport boat driving license inland sailing, VDWS basic windsurfing / catamaran license) can attend the regular instruction appointments in order to be able to borrow canoe, rowing, sailing, SUP or windsurfing materials to rent independently.

There are currently no instruction appointments for the sports canoeing, rowing, sailing, SUP and windsurfing.

The WSZ team can provide further information.
